The neurological convention [KW92] of viewing the three cardinal planes of the brain generally follows a right-handed coordinate system [Ant87] where the coordinate origin is at the posterior inferior left (see figure C.1). When viewing an image, left is the left of the patient, right is the right, top is the anterior or superior, and bottom is the posterior or inferior. This convention arises mainly from the viewing position of a neurosurgeon when operating on a patient laying prone on their posterior (looking from the patient's head to their feet so that the surgeon's left is also at the patient's left, etc.).
