Neurobiology of the Cerebral Cortex and its Thickness

• the neocortex consists of six laminae;

• the thickness of the neocortex is between 2 and 4 mm in histological studies;

• thickness of the individual laminae varies depending upon the region of the cortex;

• significant variability in sizes and locations of cytoarchitectural areas between individual brains
