ASHOKA

www.auraladventures.com

This is my brother-in-law Ashok's musical creation.  It's got a great rock-and-roll feel, and the lyrics are very interesting - not the same boring topics that you hear over and over again on the radio.  On the album shown here, The Human Mixture, Ashok did it all - he wrote the songs, arranged them, played the guitar, drums, bass, and vocals.  An amazing feat of self-determination.  It was recorded in Chicago where he toured for a while with a few different bands, including IQ Zoo.   He's now in the Big Apple putting together his next album.  Keep an eye out for it - from the previews I've been priveledged to hear, it's going to be fantastic. He's got a web site where you can hear some samples from The Human Mixture and read a bit more about Ashok.  Just click on the album or the link underneath it.

This is my husband's namesake - a Hindi swooner.  Click on the images for a quick sample of his songs. (Don't worry, my Kishore doesn't look or sound anything like this guy!)

Books I'm Recommending these days...

Bag of Bones - Stephen King

Very suspenseful with interesting revelations about characters and places uncovered throughout the story. Not very bloody/gory. I found it very difficult to put this one down.

Cloudsplitter - Russel Banks

Historical fiction novel about the fervent abolitionist John Brown. Told through letters written by his son 50 years after the Pottawatomie massacre. Gives a believable insight into his personality and motivations, and what it could have been like growing up in his household.

An Instance of the Fingerpost - Iain Pears

Historical fiction set in Oxford in the 1600’s. Cleverly written! The book is broken up into four sections, each giving an account of a specific series of events from a different character’s point of view. Each character’s account sports a different writing style, and although each account sticks to the same bare bones of the plot, none of them bear much else of a resemblence to each other.

The Killer Angels – Michael Shaara

Another historical fiction novel – this one about the Battle of Gettysburg. Well-known in historical circles as being very true to the events of this crucial battle. Also gives valuable insight into the personalities and backgrounds of each of the major players. The movie Gettysburg is based on this book.

Satanic Verses - Salman Rushdie

Fascinating connections between present life, personal history, "dream life," and biblical events. This book has apparently caused Rushdie quite a few problems with religious fanatics.  Remember – it’s FICTION!  And very well-written at that.

Buy it

The God of Small Things - Arundhati Roy

This one was very depressing - every single character is carrying a lot of uncomfortable baggage.  But in spite of the melancholy characters, I couldn't stop reading this book!  It reads like poetry - Roy's imagery is simply gorgeous.
