automated methods:
- edge detection: the "bottom-up" approach
- model-based deformable surfaces techniques: e.g. ASP (developed at MNI), later upgraded to reduce partial-volume effects and better handle thicker cortices (now called CLASP). The generated surfaces are polygonal meshes 40,962 vertices each, allowing a vertex-based approach to corticometry
